The first phase of the Banks Peninsula survey is completed

The reconnaissance phase for mapping the wider Banks Peninsula area has been completed. The purpose of this first year has been to get an overview of the soil diversity in the area, and to determine the characteristics of the main soil types found.

A total of 426 auger observations have been made across all parts of the Peninsula. Soils of the Brown, Pallic, Recent, Raw and Gley orders have been detected.

The survey will continue in 2021/22 to look into mapping the soils at lower altitudes in greater detail. The resulting map will be loaded into our S-map Online portal by end of August 2022.
