We have documented here how to find soil information for a particular address of interest.

Please note: Very few areas in New Zealand have been soil-mapped at a scale of 1:10,000 or larger. While you can get an indication of soil types and their characteristics from S-map Online, you may have to undertake additional efforts to identify local soil types and their distribution in the landscape.

In some cases it may prove useful to check the National Soil Data Repository (NDSR) for fully characterised soils in close vicinity to your area of interest. Targeted additional soil desciptions, sampling and analysis will help to reveal the nature and properties in situ.

You can also generate your own soil data, where appropriate. Check out our Visual Soil Assessment booklets with detailed instructions for self-determining soil properties such as soil structure, texture or colour.
