As announced at the Joint NZSSS and SSA Conference 2024 in Rotorua (2-5 December 2024), work is underway to produce a revised 4th edition of the NZ Soil Classification.
We invite all interested parties to contribute to this revision by downloading the draft version using the link below and emailing their changes/comments to SoilStandards@landcareresearch.co.nz, ideally (but not limited to) using the commenting/track-changes capability in MS Word.
The deadline for submissions is 30 April 2025.
The draft version that can be downloaded below contains the current tracked changes, annotations, and comments from predominantly Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research (MWLR) staff. They indicate where additions and changes have already been suggested to the existing 3rd edition from 2010. They also provide commentary, discussion, and rationale to many of these changes which we hope are helpful and informative for others.
We ask to limit the comments and changes to the technical content of the classification, since issues around document formatting will be addressed by editorial staff at MWLR separately as the final step in the revision process.
