2022 update of S-map Online

30 August 2022

S-map Online, a tool developed and updated by Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research, provides the best available soil survey data for New Zealand. This week it has had a significant nationwide update.

Main changes in this update:

  • Increased coverage
New mapping areas are located in Northland (near Moerewa), Manawatu (Horowhenua), Wellington (Wairarapa) and Canterbury (upper Rakaia) regions. Coverage now includes 51% of the farmable land area of Aotearoa New Zealand.
  • Upgraded mapping
A new soil survey replaces the existing legacy map for approximately 540,000 ha covering the Hauraki Plains, Coromandel Peninsula, west side of the Kaimai ranges and Mamaku Plateau.

  • Three new soil attribute layers
There are three new soil attribute layers available: national-scale soil carbon concentration; nitrate leaching and by-pass flow susceptibility.
